Presenters:

Dr. Janet Smylie is a family physician and public health researcher. She currently works as a research scientist at St. Michael’s hospital, Centre for Urban Health Solutions (CUHS) in Toronto where she directs the Well Living House an Action Research Centre for Indigenous Infant, Child and Family Health. Dr. Smylie has practiced and taught family medicine in diverse Indigenous communities and she is a member of the Métis Nation of Ontario. Janet will discuss how attitudinal and systemic racism are important and often unrecognized determinants of health and health care access. She will describe new research initiatives on cultural safety in health care.

Cheryl Ward is Kwakwaka’wakw from northern Vancouver Island and a member of the ‘Namgis First Nation. She is currently the Provincial Lead for San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training and the Interim Director of Indigenous Health at the Provincial Health Services Authority in BC. Cheryl developed the curriculum for the San’yas, which has now trained over 28,000 professionals in Canada. Her presentation will set the context for Indigenous Cultural Safety Training by sharing insights on how racism and stereotyping surface in health care, as well as exploring pedagogical approaches to responding to racism.
